Shop Airsoft Guns →What is airsoft?
Airsoft is a format where players use realistic replica firearms that fire 6mm plastic BBs. Unlike paintball, airsoft relies on an honour system — when you're hit, you call yourself out. It's used for recreational skirmishing, military simulation (MilSim), and competitive sport shooting across New Zealand.
Airsoft guns come in three main types: AEGs (Automatic Electric Guns) powered by a rechargeable battery, GBB gas-powered blow back guns using HPA, green gas or CO2, and spring-powered guns that are manually cocked before each shot (less common). AEGs are the most popular choice for beginners and intermediate players thanks to their reliability and ease of use.
At Paintball Shop we stock a carefully selected range of airsoft accessories suited to the New Zealand market — from entry-level to performance. All orders are shipped from our NZ warehouse.

Getting Started with
Airsoft in New Zealand
Choose your gun type
For beginners, an AEG (electric) rifle is the easiest starting point. They're reliable, consistent and don't require gas to operate. A 0.20g or 0.25g BB is the standard for most entry-level AEGs.
Get the right protection
Eye protection is non-negotiable. You need goggles or a full-face mask specifically rated for airsoft. Standard glasses and sunglasses are not adequate. Check our masks and goggles range for options.
Stock up on BBs and gas
For AEGs you'll need BBs and a battery charger. For gas guns, pick up green gas canisters or CO2 cartridges depending on your gun's requirements. We stock both.
Know the rules in NZ
Airsoft guns must be transported in a bag or case and must not be visible in public. You must be 18 or over to purchase and a member of a club OR have a firearms licence. Always check your local field or skirmish site rules before playing.
Common questions
Airsoft NZ FAQ
Are airsoft guns legal in New Zealand?
Yes, airsoft guns are legal in New Zealand. They are classified as airguns under the Arms Act. You must be EITHER 18 or over and a member of a paintball or airsoft club OR have a firearms licence to purchase one. If you dont have a club membership or licence let us know as we can help. Airsoft guns must not be carried in public, and should be transported in a bag or case out of sight. Always follow safe handling practices.
How old do you have to be to buy an airsoft gun in NZ?
You must be 18 years old or over to purchase an airsoft gun in New Zealand (or 16 with a firearms licence). This applies to online purchases as well as in-store. If you are buying a gun as a gift for someone under 18, adult supervision and safe storage are the responsibility of the purchasing adult.
What is the difference between airsoft and paintball?
Airsoft guns fire 6mm plastic BBs and generally rely on an honour system — players call their own hits. Paintball guns fire paint-filled balls that leave a visible mark on impact, making hit-calling automatic. Airsoft guns are generally more realistic in appearance and lighter to carry. We stock both — browse airsoft or browse paintball markers.
What is green gas and do I need it?
Green gas is a pressurised propane-based gas used to power gas blowback airsoft pistols and rifles. If you buy a gas-powered airsoft gun, you will need green gas (or CO2 cartridges, depending on the model) to operate it. Electric AEGs run on rechargeable batteries and do not need gas. Shop green gas and CO2 here.
Do you ship airsoft guns to Australia?
We can ship airsoft accessories and BBs to Australia. We cant ship guns sorry. For more info Get in touch here.
What BBs should I use in my airsoft gun?
Most entry-level and mid-range AEGs perform best with 0.20g or .25g BBs. Higher-performance AEGs and upgraded guns generally suit 0.25g or 0.28g BBs for better accuracy at range. Gas pistols typically use 0.20g or 0.25g. Sniper type rifles can use .30g and above depending on the situation and gun. Never use BB weights lighter than 0.20g as they can damage your gun. Avoid cheap BBs — poor-quality BBs cause jams and can damage internals.
